The ceramic foam filter is a tough foam made from ceramics. These are used for absorption of environmental pollutants, filtration of molten metal alloys, and as a substrate for catalysts requiring large internal surface area. These materials can be fabricated as high as 94 to 96% air by volume with temperature resistances as high as 1700 °C. Because most ceramics are already oxides or other inert compounds, there is no danger of oxidation or reduction of the material in ceramic foam filters.
Zirconia Ceramic Foam Filters are used for all types of molten steel like unalloyed, low alloyed, stainless and high-alloyed as well as Nickel and Cobalt-based super-alloys. With their excellent resistance to attack and corrosion from molten steel liquid, they can effectively remove inclusions, reduce trapped gas from liquid metal and provide laminar flow, and then the filtered metal is significantly cleaner.
